A Change Of Pace
A Change Of Pace talks to Camwagon
CW: We’re here with A Change of Pace, Jacksonville FL at Jackrabbits. You Guys want to go ahead and say your name and let us know what you play in the band?

ACOP: Sure, I’m Torry Jasper, I sing and play Guitar. I am Jon Kelly; I play the Drums and a little bit of the skin flute. I’m Johnny Abdullah and I play the Bass. And I’m Adam (Rodgers) and I play the Guitar.

CW: Ok, great. So, how long have you guys been playing together?

ACOP:
Torry~ well, me and Johnny have been playing together for like 5 years now where we started a band when we were freshmen in high school. We don’t really want to say what band it was…and the four of us, as A Change Of Pace have been together for like 2 years.

CW: Sounds awesome, so where did the name A Change Of Pace come from?

ACOP: Oh god, that’s top secret, we can’t tell you. There is a huge story behind it that we can’t really go and talk about. It has to do with aliens and anal probes, stuff like that. It’s top secret; we don’t really like to talk about it. Bad experience for Jon’s bunghole, it was not a good time.

CW: Ok… So…. We’ve checked out the DVD that came with the E.P. and Adam, you talk about dropping out of High school to be in the band and tour. Is that the case and true?

ACOP:
Adam~ Yeah, I just dropped out and got my G.E.D so I can at least go to college someday. (Laughs)
Jon~ Ha-ha, come on dude, you’re not going to college!
CW: Was that a hard decision to make?

ACOP:
Adam~ Not really, it was like School or Music, which one? It was pretty easy.

CW: Ok, I hear you. So if you guys could do a dream tour… who would it be with?

ACOP:
Jon~ Well, Johnny’s already going to say The Used…
Torry~ Mine seriously would be Senses Fail and we get to do that at the end of the month so yeah, if I was to pick any band they would be one of them for sure. I used to go to their shows all the time.
Jon~ Johnny still says The Used, what’s yours Adam? Adams would be Smile Empty Soul because he looks like the singer from that band. (Laughs) Mine would be Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera. Ooooh, or Lindsey Lohan and Ashlee Simpson!
Torry~ I would like to go on tour with Elton John or Eminem. (Laughs)

CW: Eminem did play the Warped Tour one year. If you want to we can set that up. So, what kind of music did you guys grow up listening too?

ACOP:
Jon~ Pop-punk mostly, like Blink 182 and Fenix TX, all those bands. Those were like the band we liked, Green day’s Dookie was the first album I really got into, that and Korn, the self-titled Korn.
Torry~ I was a big Metallica Fan, that and my dad listened to a lot of jazz. My mom listen to like 80’s rock like Def Leppard, that’s what I grew up on anyways.
Adam~ I was a Korn kid.

CW: Who influences the acoustic stuff?

ACOP:
Torry~ Acoustic song wise? I think I get a lot of influences writing wise from older bands like the Beatles, and I love the way Elton John songs are put together and I really really like David Bowie, Sting, The Police, stuff like that. Arrangement wise I try to make songs the way they all had them, real basic so there aren’t a lot of things taking away from the song. That’s why you will find our songs are very simple and very straight to the point. Not a lot of beating around the bush.
CW: So Oddly enough you mentioned Ashlee Simpson. If you Band got real famous, who in the band would most likely try and hook up with Ashlee Simpson?

ACOP: Johnny!! Definitely Johnny!! He gets all the girls and nobody would ever know about it either. He’d be like “naw dude, I swear to god dude!” He probably already did and we don’t know about it. It’s true, you guys all know it’s true!! (Laughs)

CW: So, I am assuming you all saw the write up in AP Magazine….

ACOP: OH YEAH!
Torry~ We don’t want to do too much bashing on Scott Heisel. We have plenty of things to say about him but I don’t personally want to say them. That’s his opinion and its only one person’s opinion. Even though people get really shitty reviews, for us its like we see the people who get bashed really hard or the people who get 5 stars or whatever, I never really focus on like the 2’s and 3’s bands.
Johnny~ I remember bands like Taking Back Sunday and The Early November got bashed by those online zines like AP.Net and now they are on the front of AP and all those kids still go to their fucking shows and it doesn’t matter. It’s stupid. It’s just going to make up want to work harder and be more successful.

CW: And on the flipside of that, like you were saying, if you see a one on there, somebody is going to check you out, just to see.

ACOP:
Jon~ We’ve had a lot of kids buy the cd just cause of that. We write music. We don’t write it to be Scream-o, we don’t write it to be Emo, we don’t write it to be hardcore, we just write what we want to write, and if you don’t like it, get over it and don’t listen to it. That’s why on the album you will find there isn’t a pattern. There is some really soft stuff and some breakouts. We aren’t hardcore, we aren’t pop-punk, we are just whatever we are, ya know. I get worked up, sorry.
CW: So the song “Death do us part”. Is it about anyone in Particular?

ACOP:
Jon~ It’s kind of about killing someone if you read the lyrics.
Torry~ I try not to write about things in my personal life, I try and write about things I see around me. I have a hard time digging deep into my personal emotions and stuff like that but it’s really about a lot of different things like a past relationship with one of my ex-girlfriends (Ashley Hanson, not to name names). I mean, we have all in a crappy relationship, Johnny’s been in shitty relationships, Jon’s been in shitty relationships, Adams…gay so he has been in some really weird relationships (Laughs) I don’t know, its just about whatever you want it to be about.

CW: So for me personally, this is my first time seeing you guys live. What should someone expect from an A Change of Pace show?

ACOP:
Jon~ Energy! A lot of energy. We used to run around and break things and do all kinds of stupid shit but we would sound horrible, so on this tour and the last couple tours to mellow out a bit to make better sound. We have got a lot better. We used to be horrible live.
Torry~ In my personal opinion, I don’t want to hear a cd when I go to a live show. If I want to hear the cd, I will buy and listen to the cd. If I go to a live show, I want to hear their live show. They are 2 different things.
CW: So are you saying there won’t be any lip syncing tonight?

ACOP:
Torry~ No, no Ashlee Simpson style tonight. (Laughs) I can’t even imagine lip syncing! That would be so weird.

CW: So what are some of the craziest things that have happened on the road?

ACOP:
Jon~ Oh man, there is so much! Ummm… Oh! Once we saw a dead lady!! We were driving on the highway, and... were you awake for this Torry?
Torry~ No, I was sleeping.
Jon~ So this ambulance cuts in front of us, like cuts us off, and you can see a dead body in the back of the ambulance, some lady with her jaw wide open looking like she was 200 years old, it was crazy.
Johnny~ We watched a kid poop on the street once, in San Lois Obispo, in CA.
Jon~ And he emails us every wee to see if he can see the video tape from it. There is a lot of nudity everywhere.
Torry~ Greeley Estates like to run around naked on stage and touch each other. Seriously, like we aren’t even kidding. The other night in our hotel they busted into our hotel room naked! (Laughs)

CW: So do you guys have Girlfriends or are you just being rock stars, what’s the deal for the ladies out there?

ACOP:
Jon~ We all have girlfriend except Torry.
Torry~ No, I don’t have a girlfriend, so ladies I am available and clean! (Laughs)

CW: So who does the song writing?

ACOP:
Torry~ I do for the most part, me and Adam. It’s kind of a collaboration between me and Adam. He will come up with a riff and then he and I will sit down together and write the structure of the song and take it from there. It all starts with just one riff and then it just builds. Lyrics wise, I write the lyrics.
CW: Ok, cool. So any political material ever been written or something you plan on ever doing?

ACOP:
Jon~ I think we are going to stay clear of any political stuff. We don’t really get into that. We are influence by bands that are political but we don’t really plan on ever writing anything political or religious. Mostly because we all have different beliefs when it comes to those things.
Torry~ Oddly enough we are all Republican based. Its weird, we are in such a democratic business but we are all republican cause we’re all from Arizona.
Jon~ That’ll probably change in like 2 years.

CW: Any Vegetarians in the Band?

ACOP:
Torry~ no, we are all meat eaters.
Jon~ It would be hard to be a vegetarian in a band, all you eat is McDonalds and Burger King.

CW: Great well thanks a lot you guys, you band gets 2 thumbs up from our site!

ACOP:
Torry~ Go buy the album March 22nd, it will be in Best Buys, Hot Topics, Circuit Citys. (Laughs) Shameless plug….and expect a diverse album.

CW: Great, well thanks a lot guys!

ACOP: Thank you!
