Sum 41
Sum 41-Underclass Hero (Island Records 2007)
1.5/5
Sum 41 seriously needs to find an original sound. Most admit to listening to Sum 41 hits like “Motivation” “Still Waiting” and “Fat Lip” from back in the day. That’s fine and all because at that point nobody ever heard much from Sum 41 so their sound was new. After the release of “All Killer No Filler” Sum 41 skyrocketed into the mainstream and were dubbed posers.
After that album, Sum 41 progressively kept a low profile. They released a few more albums that actually had some musical progression…yeah; it was a shock to everyone.
I believe it’s okay to expect a new sound from Sum 41’s 5th album. Sadly, the expectations are not nearly met. Sum 41 reverted back to their typical and now boring pop/punk sound from 7 years ago. Maybe they thought that since All Killer no Filler went platinum, they should try it again. WRONG. Right off the bat the song “Underclass Hero” is pretty much a rip-off of their old hits “Fat Lip” and “Motivation”. The song also resembles Zebrahead’s old hit “Someday”. The song lacks any originality whatsoever. Needless to say, the rest of the album stays the same.
To further add on to the lack of Sum 41’s originality, has anyone seen the music video for Underclass Hero? Does it resemble a certain My Chemical Romance video?
Short and simply put: this Sum 41 album is a dud.
